The Ringier Advertising online dashboard offers customers access to statistics and “receipts” for their advertising. While this may not sound unique at first, these “receipts” are not traditional payment records but rather proof of booked advertising. For print products, this includes physical copies of newspapers or magazines.

The task was to make daily newspapers, magazines, and special editions available online while ensuring that the right customers had access to them.

Access Management for Documents

With their personal login, advertising customers gain access to a dashboard where they can view the specific print editions in which their advertisements appeared. This could range from a single issue of a daily newspaper to the entire portfolio of magazines.

The foundation of this system is a sophisticated rights management feature, allowing Ringier administrators to control which users have access to which brands. They can also restrict access to specific time periods. For example, one user might only see a single issue of «Blick», while another has access to two months’ worth of «Beobachter» editions.

PDF viewer for print products

With the appropriate permissions, customers can navigate to the desired print product and view the corresponding issue.

To ensure maximum security, we avoided using a standard PDF inline viewer, which could easily allow PDFs to be downloaded and shared. Instead, we developed a custom viewer that performs an additional rights check each time a user accesses a file.

For added convenience, customers can use the screenshot function to save and archive the specific pages they need. This approach balances security with usability, providing a seamless and controlled experience.

Dynamic and Always Up-to-Date Covers

As part of our online library process, we automatically scan PDFs, convert them into suitable formats, and extract the cover images. We’ve taken this a step further by introducing a new feature: dynamic, always-up-to-date covers.

With this enhancement, the latest cover for every print product is displayed on the website and updated daily. This functionality isn’t limited to the websites we manage— it can also be leveraged by Ringier for other applications, ensuring consistency and freshness across multiple platforms.
