Why we built the tool

The idea for Mosaic Maker arose from a real everyday project: In a customer project for Deep Tech Nation Switzerland, we worked with mosaic elements that are dynamically generated by generated there. This solution works great for interactive, programmatically generated content – but if you need static mosaic graphics for print, presentations or social media, it quickly becomes cumbersome.

Tools such as Figma or Illustrator in particular offer options for drawing tiles, but manually placing, coloring and varying them is extremely time-consuming – especially when it comes to larger areas or random patterns. We were missing a tool that could do exactly this: Designing mosaics that are creative, visually strong and quick to produce at the same time.

This is how Mosaic Maker was born: a lightweight, web-based tool that offers creative freedom without the hassle of vector graphics software. For design ideas, quick prototypes or simply for inspiration.

Why the tool is important and practical

Mosaic graphics can be used in a variety of ways: as decorative backgrounds, as a graphic stylistic device or as eye-catchers for presentations, websites and media content. But although the principle is simple – surface plus tiles plus color – the implementation is often tedious. Especially when randomness comes into play or colors are to be combined, a simple grid is not enough.

Mosaic Maker solves exactly this problem. Instead of struggling with graphics programs, you can create mosaics directly in your browser – with full control over size, colors, opacity, background and even export format. The tool allows you to create exactly the mood you need in seconds: calm and geometric or lively and rich in contrast.

The export is particularly practical: you can download the finished mosaic as a PNG or SVG – ideal for use both on the web and in print. And with the Copy Preset URL, you can share your settings or reuse them later – perfect for collaborative work or as a recurring design element.

How the tool works

The Mosaic Maker offers you numerous options for individual design:

• Dimensions: You can define the height and width of the image – square or rectangular, just as you like.
• Tile size: Determine how large the individual mosaic tiles should be – the smaller, the more detailed the pattern.
• Background color: Choose a color for the background – or leave it transparent if you want to place the mosaic over other elements later.
• Colors & opacity: Define up to 10 different colors for the tiles – each with individual opacity. The distribution is random, which gives each image its own dynamic.

You can see the resulting mosaic directly in the live preview. If you are satisfied, you can export the image in high quality as a PNG or SVG. And with a click on “Copy Preset URL” you can easily share or archive your setup.
