Why we built the tool

We like to use Google Fonts in many web projects: the selection is large, the quality is high and integration is simple. However, the more data protection comes into focus, the more problematic it becomes to call up Google servers directly when a website is running – especially in Europe. External requests, especially to Google, are not only a legal risk in terms of the GDPR, but also a loss of control over your own website.

Time and again, we have faced the same dilemma: Google Fonts yes, but locally please. The solutions for this have often been cumbersome – be it manual downloads, complex build scripts or questionable third-party tools. So we decided to build a tool ourselves that would finally make this process simple.

Our goal: A lean tool that retrieves fonts directly from the official source, converts them cleanly and makes them available in just a few steps – without compromising on quality, performance or data protection.

Why the tool is important and practical

At first glance, the integration of web fonts seems like a technical detail – but it has far-reaching consequences. If you load Google Fonts directly from the Google CDN, you also transfer user data to Google. This can be problematic from a data protection perspective and has already led to warnings. Data protection is a particularly sensitive issue in the EU – and website operators must actively address it.

Local Google Fonts provides a remedy here. The tool makes it very easy to integrate GDPR-compliant fonts – without any third-party tracking and with full control over loading behavior, performance and caching. Websites also benefit from shorter loading times, as the fonts come directly from their own server and can be better integrated into the existing hosting stack.

For agencies, developers and website operators, this means less legal uncertainty, better performance and clean technical implementation – all with just a few clicks.

How the tool works

With Local Google Fonts, you only need to insert the link to the desired fonts. You will find this link directly at Google Fonts once you have selected a font. The tool downloads the corresponding font files in various weights and styles directly from the official Google Fonts API and prepares them in an optimized package.

This package contains:

• the .woff2 files of the font,
• an automatically generated @font-face CSS,
• If desired, also the theme.json implementation for WordPress projects.

So you get exactly what you need – without superfluous ballast, without complicated tools. Everything is locally executable, GDPR-compliant and ready to use. Simply select a font, download it, integrate it – done. This makes data protection the standard, not the exception.
